"I'd been running a lot and starting to pick up more injuries. I figured if I wanted to do well later in life, I need to focus on my strength, my flexibility, my mobility."

Gareth had been a runner for years, and by 53 the sport was starting to charge him for it. Niggles turned up more often and cleared more slowly. The maths wasn't complicated: running alone was no longer going to hold him together, and if he wanted another twenty years of it, the strength work had to come first.
The strength work has done exactly what he hired it to do. His back squat and seated low row are where he's moved furthest, he's one of the most consistent athletes in the gym, and the injuries that prompted the whole thing no longer dictate his running.
He and his partner Ali joined on impulse, spotting VAMOS across the road while shopping at Woolworths and signing up almost immediately. What keeps him there is the structure. His programme is refreshed every 13 weeks with results at the end of each block, which is exactly the consistency he'd been missing.
